Thanks for your question. 
For this issue, we are sorry for the trouble caused to you. Our BTI-042 doesn't support AAC codec, it supports aptX/aptX-HD/aptX-LL/SBC. If you want to use the adapter as a receiver, you can buy our BTI-018, it supports AAC in RX mode.

What is the realistically range for this unit? I am deciding between this and the Taotronics which has a more believable  range.

Thank you for your question! Our long range Bluetooth audio adapter transmission range up to 265ft (80m) line-of-sight in open air and up to 100-130ft (30-40m) indoors. NOTE: Operation range can be affected by Wi-Fi routers, Wireless TV adapters etc and also depends on receiving device.
